Why do people buy diamonds? ( F Block)

The main reasons people buy diamonds are because they are simply beautiful stones that symbolize many things people believe are important. Diamonds have a lot of expensive traditions behind them for example they are used as a symbol of eternal love, and because people are always people constantly falling in love that is one reason why people by diamonds. They also show status since America is a consumers market we Americans always want the biggest and the best when it comes to everything, and the size of the diamond is a way of displaying status. Status is very important to most people because it determines how you are viewed in the eyes of other people. Also diamonds are things that society makes you think you should have because they are pretty, shiny, and worth a lot of money. Advertisements have a lot to do with diamond sales because they brainwash into thinking you need to have them in order to show that you have a lot of money or really care about someone. Diamonds are used to keep many traditions alive.

  1. I agree with Elyse's point about the importance of social status in America, and how possessing diamonds can help raise your status in the eye's of others. Although they have virtually no uses, diamonds are purchased to show affection. People want to obtain them because wearing them shows apparent wealth, since they are generally very expensive. I believe Elyse was also correct with her idea of advertisements affecting the desire for diamonds. People feel the need to buy them after they see how wealthy and important the models displaying the diamonds look. Diamonds are a very successful product, despite their uselessness.

  2. Elyse makes a lot of good points however i agree with her most on her point about how society views diamonds as a high class item. I didn't know diamonds don't have a really high value until today in class. The ads for diamond products do a very good job on portraying diamonds as a symbol of a wealth.

  3. I agree with Elyse, that Diamonds show socail status, but I also believe that diamonds represent a lot of things. For the most part they represent love. Whenever somebody wants to show a woman how much they love them, and are willing to spend some money, it is usually on diamonds. Sons give their mothers diamonds, fathers give their wives and daughters diamonds, grandmothers give their grand daughters diamonds. It is a representation of how somebody feels towards a woman, which explains why it is of so much value

  4. I agree with the points that Elyse made in relation to social status, and would like to present the hypothesis that it could be an obsession simply because it seems to have always been that way, and no one has thought to question the status that diamonds have been branded with.

  5. As many others have already said i agree with the fact that they can be used to display social prowess and other such meanings. They are also prized just simply for the fact that they are rare. This is rellaited to having to have something better than anone. habit that many american's have fallen into.

  6. I also agree the most on the fact that diamonds display social status. Diamond is always considered as a high-class item that symbolizes the wealth and power. Also diamonds can represent love. People spend a lot of money on diamond rings to show how much you love other.

  9. Elyse makes a very good point that diamonds are only jewels of the affluent. Social ranking has a lot to do with the reasoning behind purchasing diamonds. When someone wears the diamonds, they feel like royalty, since kings and queeens are really where the 'diamond equal wealth and power' mindset comes from. Also, tradition is more powerful than one would think. Tradition has shaped the way cultures develop, so it's not a surprise that it's socially accepted to always buy a diamond ring to propose, or diamond earrings for an anniversary.

  10. I like what Elyse has pointed out about people being caught up in their appearance towards others, and that with diamonds, they can seem more important than other people. It shows that all of us feel the need to show that we are important, whether it be on the inside or on the outside. I also like what Bryn said about diamonds being rare. If someone buys a diamond, then he or she can say that they are apart from everyone else, since not everyone can have such a rare thing as a diamond.
